For our #follow this week please welcome #gogetter Naomi McGregor TEDx speaker, Royal Academy of Engineering Leaders Scholar and founder & CEO of Movetru.

#FollowMoveTru @movetru

Inspired by her background in ballet dancing and teaching, after graduating in July 2020 with a first-class master’s in Product Design Engineering, Naomi decided to pursue her dissertation as a business with a vision to change the sports industry, forever! Movetru is a multi-award-winning tech start-up that specialises in reducing rehabilitation time and optimising athletic performance.

Here’s a sneak peek behind the movement revolution #startup driven by Naomi.

1.    How would you describe yourself in 6 words or less?

Innovator, Social-Norm Challenger, and Resilient.

2.    What promoted you to start your business?

At 14 years old, I injured myself during ballet. It took over three years and eight different specialists to finally diagnose the injury. At this time, I was told I would never be able to dance again. Unfortunately, my story is not unique, and athletes across the world suffer from life-altering injuries that could be dealt with in a more efficient manner or prevented entirely. For my engineering dissertation, I had the opportunity to put forward my own idea and I jumped at the chance! I combined my passion for dance, frustration of injury, and knowledge of engineering. When I submitted my dissertation in March, I couldn’t walk away from Movetru. I pursued competitions, registered my company in July, and declined my graduate role in September. And so, Movetru was born!

3.    Tell us a bit more about you

I love to keep busy and continually push myself out of my comfort zone! Currently I work full time on Movetru and am completing my Level 4 Personal Trainer and additional teaching Certification.

In July I graduated with a 1st Class Honour in Product Design Engineering and Degree Plus from Queen’s University Belfast. During my time at university, I received the Royal Academy of Engineering Leaders Scholarship, SMAE Engineering Leadership Programme, travel scholarship to Denmark and China, worked in industry-leading manufacturing, research and development firms, acted as course representative, completed my Team Leader Green Belt in Lean, and recently found out my dissertation was awarded the Institute of Mechanical Engineering Best Project Certificate in my school.

Alongside this, I am a strong STEM ambassador and model for fun (because why can’t we do it all?)

4.    How has being part of the AwakenHub community helped your business?

The AwakenHub community is so unique.

Since starting my business during COVID-19, I felt I lacked social contact and wanted to increase my network with fellow female founders. The community were so welcoming immediately! I was in awe at the journey these women have gone through. The monthly events leave me on a high for days listening to their inspirational stories. (The advice is really good too!!) The community has made me feel more confident within myself and my business.
