#FollowTherapix
Founded by Banu Balaji, a Clinical Specialist Occupational Therapist with over 20 years in Ireland’s Health Service Executive, Therapix is a platform dedicated to transforming support for children with developmental delays. Banu, who holds a Bachelor’s in Occupational Therapy and a Master’s in Psychosocial Rehabilitation, has extensive experience across mental health services for both adults and children. Her vision for Therapix is rooted in a neuro-affirming, strengths-based approach that empowers parents, caregivers, and educators with practical tools to help children thrive.
Through Therapix, Banu’s team delivers short, easy-to-follow videos filled with therapy ideas for use at home and school, helping reduce stress and provide clarity for families. With a deep passion for addressing developmental trauma and attachment, Banu also collaborates with TUSLA to support children in care, provides private consultations, and hosts the Therapod Podcast to break down essential information for caregivers.
Recently, Therapix made the National Startup Awards 2024 regional shortlist in two categories, an exciting recognition of the dedication poured into this mission. This honour fuels the drive to reach new milestones, including launching Therapix with 500 users within 12 months and aiming for integration with agencies like the NHS and HSE in the next five years.
Why did you become a founder?
I am driven to use my skills and knowledge to make a difference. As an Occupational Therapist, I have always struggled with the concept of "waiting lists" and am passionate about improving support for families looking to make a difference in their child’s life. Therapix aims to scale therapy in a practical, user-friendly way. One of the biggest challenges therapists face is the repetitive delivery of essential information for home and school programmes. Now, with digital tools, we can easily provide this information in a digestible, accessible format.
A little about you...
I am of Indian origin, grew up in Qatar, lived briefly in India, and have now been in Ireland for over 20 years. I worked as an Occupational Therapist in the HSE before leaving two years ago to build Therapix.
What is it like to be a female founder?
Being a female founder has taught me to tap into my inner strength and find support among my network of women. I’ve learned that if you want something done, you often have to take the lead yourself! Some days are tough, and other days, the motivation flows—but maintaining a balanced lifestyle, with practices like yoga, exercise, and health mindfulness, has been invaluable. There is no magic wand, though maybe a touch of luck can help!
Have you found other female networks useful?
I’ve been attending Awaken Angels events and have had the chance to network with inspiring women. I’ve found the group both welcoming and motivating.
What do you need help with?
Financial management is an area where I would love advice and support, as this isn’t my strongest skill.
What is important to you in business?
Fair pay for all employees and contractors. Therapix is here to make money but, more importantly, to make a meaningful difference.
Where do you see the company in 12 months? In 5 years?
In 12 months, I aim to have launched Therapix with 500 users. In 5 years, I want Therapix to be integrated into governmental agencies such as the NHS and HSE.
